Lawn Installation

We provide lawn installations two different ways by using seed and hay/straw or hydroseeding. Seed and hay provide a growth period of 3-4 weeks if proper level of moisture is provided. Hydroseeding is the fastest growing technology. Hydroseeding provides growth anywhere from 7-14 days if proper level of moisture is provided. To get more info on hydroseeding click here. Once your site is graded with adequate topsoil, we come in with our equipment and begin work. Our Harley rake leaves a beautiful ready-to-be-seeded bed. We use the finest seed in our lawn installs for that top-notch result. We use a mechanical hay/straw blower to chop up the bales so that it will uniformly distribute the hay/straw. The state of the art equipment we use means your lawn will end up looking its best. Early fall or spring provide the optimum conditions needed for successful grass seed germination. Seed may be sown in summer if irrigation is available.

Hydroseeding/Watering

Hydroseeding
Hydroseeding may also be considered for establishing lawns. In hydroseeding, grass seed is mixed with water, fertilizer, and fiber mulch. Then the slurry is sprayed directly onto the prepared seedbed. The mixture holds the seeds in place and helps retain moisture until roots are firmly established.
We also offer custom blend mixtures of wild flowers, grasses, crown vetch, and others.
Hydroseeding is a grass planting process. The process is fast, efficient, and economical. This grass planting process is more effective than conventional seeding and certainly more economical than conventional sodding. Hydroseeding allows you to have a lush, emerald green lawn in only a small number of days. You receive a top-quality seed mix. Hydroseeding also allows for the most effective application of grass seed, mulch, and fertilizer in large or small areas and it effectively prevents erosion on steep banks. It is safe and non-toxic. For more information, pictures, and notes on how to take care of your hydro-seeded lawn click here.

Watering
Watering is a very important part of the grass growing process. With little water, grass won't grow. We understand that people are busy and have little time to water each spot for 15-20 minutes everyday. However, it would be a shame to have a beautifully installed lawn and not get the results you anticipated because of a lack of watering. With Planet Landscaping's watering service you have no need to worry. We come to you and make sure that your lawn gets the necessary amount of water it needs. Our watering service provides just the right amount of water needed to help you get that green grass you desire. Our trained staff gets the work done quickly and efficiently.

Erosion Control/Hydro-Composting

Erosion Control
Our company offers several different kinds of erosion control. Some methods are: hydro-mulching, straw cover, and erosion mats. They are combined with "Dirt Bond" polymers that bind the soil's molecular particles together to form a waterproof, silt retention barrier on slopes in critical erosion areas.

Hydro-Composting
We have also developed Hydro-Composting. We apply a high grade, fully organic compost mixed with water and seed mix to new and existing lawns. Compost is most beneficial to lawns because it adds micronutrients and organic matter to the soil.

Excavation

Compact Excavator Service
Digging, obviously, is one of the biggest jobs at residential/commercial construction sites. When homes are being built, digging for foundations, utilities, retaining walls, pools, ponds, and all types of landscaping take place.
Our compact excavator is excellent for digging in confined areas. It gives us the ability to do difficult work without hauling in massive equipment. Our excavator can slip through a gate and perform work that otherwise would have to be done by hand. Our compact excavator also has a zero tail swing, which helps it fit better into small spaces such as backyards and tight spaces.
With its rubber tracks, the excavator can go in and do the work that needs to be done and won't destroy the customer's existing grass. It only leaves a slight footprint.
Our compact excavator is used for every kind of task imaginable, including utility trenching, concrete removal, tree removal, repair digs, swimming pool excavation, tree transport and planting, even grave digging. The compact excavator is used in many other applications such as installing utilities, landscaping, fencing, digging bases for retaining walls, and pools and ponds. It is also great for site preparation and cleanup, as well as renovation and demolition work. We use our excavators to repair sewer and water lines, as well as install new systems for homes and businesses. We also excavate for "under excavation," where the compact excavator digs beneath existing structures, excavating materials or rebuilding a foundation.
Using our compact excavator we can meet the needs of prospective customers, whether it’s excavating in a tight spot, digging a difficult landscape, or making repairs for broken utility lines without leaving a mess.

Retaining Walls/Bed Installation

Retaining Walls
Retaining walls can be used in landscaping or to prevent erosion. Retaining walls are constructed of rock, dressed stone, manufactured masonry units, concrete, and timber railroad ties. A retaining wall should be thought of as an architectural unit that must be designed to blend with other refined landscape elements.
Retaining walls are used to retain the earth at nearly a 90-degree angle. Since this angle far exceeds the earth's normal angle of repose, the wall must hold its position against the tremendous pressure of water and earth. We will design your retaining wall so that the wall will not give away as a result of the pressure from the earth behind.
The exposed face of a retaining wall can offer visual interest through texture, light, shadow patterns, and contrasting vertical elements. They are also visually appealing and complement rock gardens beautifully.
A garden can bring a new focus to your yard, especially if it is bordered by a low, curving line of rocks. A wall not only provides a visual boundary, but also can divide your garden into areas for distinctly different uses.
You may want a stone retaining wall, a low brick divider wall, or an open wall of decorative concrete blocks. A wall may be nothing more than a few courses of stone or concrete block to mark the edge of a suburban lawn, or it may be a sinuously curving brick wall to enclose an estate.

Bed Installation
If you're a business owner you probably will want beautifully designed landscaping that attracts future tenants and investors. Your landscaping should provide a professional appearance to visitors. Planet Landscaping can create a well-planned landscape design and installation to fit your needs.
Residential owners will desire an attractive landscaping to increase the value of their home and form a spectacular view from their house of the outdoor living area. Great landscaping provides curb appeal and a private retreat from busy lives. Our design installation department can do these projects for you. Let our landscape and horticulture knowledge guide you in creating the landscaped home you've always dreamed about to enjoy for years and years to come.
We can design and install flowerbeds to suit your taste. We can plant flowers in every color of the rainbow with an enormous array of shapes, textures, and scents that will please the homeowners. Attractive mixed borders are interplanted with shrubs, annuals, bulbs, or even fruits and vegetables. There are flowers to suit all tastes, from delicate Gypsophila to sumptuous peonies and spiky delphiniums. Some are followed by attractive seedheads. Flowerbeds can introduce variety to even a tiny garden or bring greater detail to a large one, providing a virtually unlimited palette for a garden that can be a masterpiece.
A well-designed landscape is a pleasure to the family. It adds to the property's resale value. Landscape design involves much more than placing trees, shrubs, and other plants on the property. It is an art, which deals with conscious arrangement or organization of outdoor space for human satisfaction and enjoyment.

Spring/Fall Clean-up

It is important to have your lawns cleaned up in spring and fall. Not only will it be attractive but also provides a benefit to your lawn.

Spring Clean-up
When winter is over and it's finally nice enough to venture out into your yard, the first thing that you should do is to ensure that your lawn will have a good head start for the growing season ahead. All the debris that has built up over winter months must be cleared away. Our spring cleanup service includes blowing out all flowerbeds and lawn areas, cutting down all dead perennials, removing all deadwood on plants, and edging of all beds around the house.

Fall Clean-up
Autumn cleanup can be an imposing task. Leaves pile up outdoors, along with branches and other debris. These items must be cleaned up before the snow hits. Our fall cleanup service includes cleaning annual and perennial beds, trimming hedges, cleaning gutters, applying winter fertilizers, and removing leaves and debris that have fallen to the ground.

Rototilling/Bush Hogging

Rototilling and bush hogging is an excellent way to cut high brush and turn the earth to improve overgrown areas.

Rototilling
Rototilling is used for turning over the soil in compacted areas of your yard. It breaks up the compacted soil and reduces it to a fine, crumbly, surface layer of soil fine enough for planting. We also use a rototiller to chop up the weeds and break up matted vegetation. Another use is for annual weed control between rows of vegetables.

Brush Hog
If high brush is your problem, then we have the solution. Cutting tall, thick grass and weeds requires more power than any other mowing job. This is why ordinary lawn mowers, with their enclosed decks, quickly clog and stall if you try to cut "off-lawn" in fields or pastures. Our brush hog is designed to take the toughest brush down. Our brush hog can clear tough brush, weeds and saplings from your overgrown property, transforming it into land you can use and be proud of!

Fertilize/Thatching/Aerating

Fertilizing, thatching and aerating are all important steps to keeping a healthy, green turf.

Fertilization is the practice by which nutrients are supplied for plant growth. Without these nutriments your lawn will not havea healthy appearance. With all the different fertilizers out there, applying the right kind of fertilizer can be difficult. Not only that, but applying that correct amount and choosing the right time to fertilize, can also be tricky. Planet Landscaping takes the complexity out of fertilization. We evaluate your lawn and give it the right nutrients it needs. In most cases fertilizing is a four-step process. Lawns need the fertilizer for a greener, healthier turf.

Thatching is a matted layer of dead vegetation at the base of a lawn. It is important to reduce excessive thatch. A certain amount of thatch (up to about ½ inch deep) is beneficial since it reduces evaporation and helps to protect the lawn from wear. In excess, however, thatch prevents water from reaching the soil beneath and may itself become saturated, interfering with drainage. The removal of thatch also encourages new grass growth and so promotes healthy, vigorous turf. We come in and dethatch the lawn to remove the wasted vegetation so that the grass will get less disease.

Aeration is vital since it allows deep root growth by reducing soil compaction. Compacted soil tends to be too wet in winter and too dry in summer. Water frequently runs off the surface rather than percolating deep down. Yet, once the soil is wet, it drains slowly. A soil, such as this, is difficult to work, and in the summer it may become hard and concrete-like. As a result, plant roots have great difficultly penetrating the soil and plant growth is impeded. When soil particles are compressed, the amount of air in the soil is reduced and so drainage is hindered. Aerating allows the air to circulate through. Thus, the more air the soil has, the healthier your lawn will be. By aerating your lawn, you'll be improving the movement of air, water, and nutrients into the soil by making holes or slits in it.

Lawn Care

Are you dissatisfied with your lawn? Are you tired of mowing it? Maybe you don't have the time to care for your lawn properly. At Planet Landscaping we take care of your worries so that you have time for other things in your life.
We mow lawns regularly for both aesthetic and functional reasons. Generally, the more the grass is cut, the more attractive it appears. Regular mowing results in a more uniform turf surface and a finer leaf texture and density. Overall turf quality suffers severely when grass is not cut. If mowing is performed correctly, an attractive, functional, and healthy stand of grass can be maintained. The major reason for the decline of many turf areas is poor mowing practices such as cutting the grass too low or too infrequently, or using a dull blade.
Our lawn care service provides weekly mowing and trimming of turf areas. We also blow away lawn clippings from all walkways. Edging, weed control, and an irrigation check are other available services.A beautiful, well-maintained lawn can make you proud and enhance your home's appearance.

Loam, Compost, & Mulch Delivery

Loam
Loam soils have the ideal balance of minerals which result in good drainage and water retention. Loam also is fertile and provides great soil for growing gardens and grass.

Compost
Compost is decayed organic matter and is a valuable additive prized for its soil-improving properties. There are many kinds of soil mixes, each made from precise combinations of mainly organic materials. Compost is used for growing plants in containers and for spreading on lawns and in gardens.

Topsoil
If you're planting or replanting your lawn, you need to have a good layer of topsoil. There are many varieties of loam and soil available. You can essentially customize your soil needs. Distribute about four to six inches of topsoil over your lawn area for a healthy lawn.

Mulch
Neatly mulched beds improve the appearance of any landscape. But beyond its appearance, a layer of mulch provides many other benefits. Mulch protects the plants' root systems and can add much-needed nutrients to the soil. Mulch slows the erosion of topsoil. Mulch helps to prevent weeds and retain moisture. You'll spend less time weeding and watering your garden and more time enjoying it. In order for mulch to work and look its best, you must choose the best material for your garden and apply it properly.
Mulches are available in organic and inorganic forms and improve plant growth in several ways. They regulate soil temperature, insulate plant roots from temperature extremes, reduce water loss from soil surface, and help stop weed seeds from germinating. Organic mulches comes in many different textures and are derived from natural sources. They enrich the soil through decomposition. Inorganic mulches are man-made. They work well and tend to last longer.

Organic Mulches:
  • Wood chips or shavings are visually pleasing and have all the characteristics of a good mulch. It is advisable to use older, decomposed material. Wood mulch that has not been properly aged or turned regularly can contain toxins and acids that are harmful to young plants. Fungal contamination can also occur with unseasoned wood mulch.
  • Bark is sold as chunks, nuggets, or shredded. Bark is one of the most attractive mulch materials, so it may be best used in more visible areas. Pine, cedar, and cypress are the most common varieties. In addition to its appearance, bark provides good weed prevention and moisture retention.
Inorganic Mulches:
  • Plastic warms the soil, plus blocks air and water. Plant growth is accelerated by the added heat and moisture retained underneath the mulch layer. Since plastic is solid, moisture must be provided by an irrigation system underneath or by careful hand watering. Black or clear plastic can be used. Black is impervious to light, while clear plastic has been known to let weeds germinate and grow beneath. On the downside, plastic can overheat the plants roots or retain too much moisture, particularly if the plastic is covered with a layer of organic mulch for appearance sake. Plastic will freeze, so you may need to take it up in the fall. If used on slopes, any material placed on top of plastic will wash away or slide off. Plastic is well-suited for use in vegetable gardens.
  • Brick or Stone offers a neat appearance but may not blend with every landscape design. They offer some weed control. Brick and stone (especially lighter shades) will reflect heat back up towards plants, which may be harmful. This mulch is certainly long lasting. Be careful - if pieces are strewn into the lawn, they can become potential hazards when mowing.
  • Landscape Fabric provides good weed control. Plus, unlike plastic, the fabric allows air and moisture to penetrate into the soil and plant roots. Overall, it's the best inorganic mulch for long-term use. Roots can become enmeshed in the fabric, making removal difficult, so be sure to remove weeds as soon as you see them.

Drainage

Poor drainage is a common problem on landscapes sites. It is typically caused by disturbances to the native soil.
Soils that have higher clay content often drain too slowly. Inadequate drainage can occur even in coarse-textured soils if they are subjected to heavy traffic and become compacted.
Poorly drained soils can cause serious problems. Wet soils tend to be compacted more easily. Soils that are very wet may be colder than dry soils. Plant growth is inhibited when the temperature of the root zone is too cool. Diseases are also more common where the soil remains very wet. Improving texture and structure may provide only partial solution to drainage problems. Serious problems can be corrected by installing a drainage system.
The installation of a properly designed drainage system will correct your drainage problems. Also, there are other options out there such as installing water-loving native grasses, trees, or a small water garden. Planet landscaping will evaluate your drainage problems and suggest the steps necessary to correct them.

Lighting

As Christmas lights go up on homes and on businesses annually, the displays seem to get more elaborate every year. Most people would love to have a great display of Christmas lights but don't want the hassle of stringing the lights themselves. Not everyone wants to climb around on the roof. For many others it is a dreaded winter chore. Some people would rather avoid the frustrations of burned out strings of lights, working in freezing temperatures and climbing tall ladders perched on icy sidewalks. Bad weather, hard-to-reach spots, safety factors and limited time are some reasons why individuals don't display lights. We'll provide the lighting installations and save you the headaches.
We give homeowners a variety of options, from simple to spectacular. Options include decorating windows and adding landscape lighting such as staked lighting or luminaries along walks, flowerbeds and driveways. Garlands, wreaths and bows are available for ornamentation that stand out during daylight hours. You may want to start out simple the first year and then add on to your design in following years. We work with the homeowner to decide what they really like and what fits their budget.
Planet Landscaping will install lights and then take down the decorations after the holidays. Whatever amount a customer feels comfortable spending, we will make sure their house looks great this holiday season!
